The Right to Vote and the Enduring Civil Rights Struggle with Prof. Atiba Ellis

The civil rights legacy that we celebrate on the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is at its core a legacy of fighting for democracy. The campaigns of Frederick Douglass for the African American right to vote, the protests of the civil rights movement of the 1960s for a meaningful Voting Rights Act, and the struggles around election integrity today, all reflect this legacy. This conversation will reflect on this legacy of the contested right to vote and will discuss what democracy could mean in the multiracial America of the 21st century. Professor Atiba Ellis is a tenured professor at Case Western University School of Law and nationally recognized scholar on matters of race, voting rights and election law. Lunch will be provided.

Location: Pritzker School of Law, Strawn Hall (MC 195)
