Originally from New Jersey, Krista was a first-generation college student and the first in her family to study abroad. She received her B.A. in Linguistics and German Language & Literature from Haverford College, spent her junior year abroad in Freiburg, Germany, and completed her M.S.Ed. degree in Higher Education Administration & Policy at Northwestern. After working in banking for a few years, Krista interned at IES Abroad in Chicago and joined Northwestern Study Abroad in 2007. As a Senior Assistant Director in the financial aid office, Krista is a member of both the Global Learning and Financial Aid teams.

  • Manager, Study Abroad Financial Services: advise students and families on study abroad financial aid, scholarships, billing, and budgeting; manage and award study abroad financial aid and certify scholarship applications; liaise with programs regarding fees and invoices; help ensure access to study abroad, particularly for students with high financial need and first-generation students

Catrina DeBord

Catrina DeBord has been in the field of international education for over 15 years and currently serves as the Senior Associate Director of Global Learning at Northwestern University overseeing programs and operations. She received her BA in International Relations, International Studies, and Italian from University of Wisconsin-Madison and her MS in Communication from Northwestern University. Catrina studied abroad in France and Italy and has worked and traveled abroad in various locations throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Before joining Northwestern, Catrina was the Associate Director of International Programs at Columbia College Chicago where she focused on centralizing and streamlining faculty-led programs and operations running across six continents.

 Catrina is a member of Diversity Abroad, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, The Forum on Education Abroad, the Global Leadership League, the Northwestern Education Abroad Crisis Management Council, and the Association of Northwestern Women. She also actively volunteers with professional organizations, serving as the NAFSA Region V Chair (2019-2021), NAFSA Region V Education Abroad Representative (2018-2019), and the International Educators of Illinois (IEI) Study Abroad Representative (2015-2017). When she isn’t busy exploring Chicago neighborhoods with her husband and dog, Catrina loves to travel, learn about different perspectives and cultures, and taste foods from around the world.

Patrick EcclesPatrick Eccles has been working in international education at Northwestern since 2012. In his role at GLO, Patrick oversees program development for global service learning (Global Engagement Studies Institute) and undergraduate research abroad programs. While at Northwestern, Patrick has pursued efforts to prioritize equity of access to study abroad, promote ethical practice in university-community partnerships and establish campus partnerships to foster identity development and critical reflection through global learning programs. Prior to Northwestern, he spent seven years working to expand and deepen experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students while coordinating local, domestic and international immersion experiences at Loyola University Chicago. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from the University of Chicago. He speaks fluent Spanish. An outdoor enthusiast, Patrick enjoys biking, hiking, camping, birding and exploring nature in the Midwest or any place he travels.

Jessica Fetridge

Jessica graduated with a MEd in Higher Education from Loyola University Chicago and a BS in International Business and Spanish from the University of Dayton. She has studied abroad twice, first as an undergraduate studying Spanish and business for a semester at the University of Deusto in San Sebastián, Spain and later as a graduate student studying International Education at Loyola’s campus in Rome. Before coming to Northwestern, she was the Training Director of the Urban Chicago Chapter of Amigos de las Américas, training students to lead community development projects in Latin America and worked as an adviser at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Study Abroad Office.

Jessica is a member of NAFSA, Diversity Abroad, the Forum on Education Abroad, and the Executive Committee of IFSA’s National Advisory Board. She is currently serving as the Management Content Coordinator for NAFSA's Education Abroad Knowledge Community and was previously a Coach for the NAFSA Academy Region V Cohort for Academy Class 17. In her spare time she likes reading, cooking, and cheering loudly at her children's myriad sporting events.

Miranda Goosby

Miranda Goosby maneuver’s the world through an intersectional feminist lens where the complexity of one’s identity is explored. Miranda aids in managing program development for GLO, focusing on global service learning. In the past, through visual and written documentation, she has centered the voices of People of Color, specifically Black and Brown marginalized folk within issues ranging from reproductive justice and children’s rights, community and global development, and educational equity. Miranda is a native of Maryland and has great love for the East Coast.  She previously attended Lake Forest College, focusing on International Relations and Women and Gender Studies. She has collaborated and contributed to the work of nonprofit and social justice organizations through strategy development, facilitation, training, campaign building, content creation, program coordination, community engagement, journalism, and research. Miranda has worked with organizations such as BYP 100, Sixty Inches From Center, Illinois Humanities and United Working Families.

 

Working within higher education, Miranda brings to the Global Learning Office (GLO) a passion for advising on a large portfolio of global engagement programs. She also brings experience facilitating spaces for critical movement and conversation that are equitable, inclusive and consider the lived experiences of all involved. Before joining the GLO staff, Miranda previously worked with Illinois Humanities as a Program Coordinator within their Sojourner Scholars program and Summer Institute. She aided in facilitating a curriculum for incoming high school seniors based around radical love, self- determination and educational equity in Chicago, IL. She held weekly classes based around collective conversations on mental health, physical well-being, and collective self-determination. In her personal time, Miranda loves to travel, swim, explore conversations, listen to podcasts and cook for her loved ones.

Carmen Hernández

Mexican-American and a first-generation college student, Carmen received her BFA and a minor in Spanish Literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Carmen joined the office after completion of her second master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University. She also holds a master’s degree in Linguistics. As an undergraduate student, she studied abroad twice, the first time in Rome, Italy where she studied Italian film and art history and the second time in Santiago, Chile where she studied photography and Spanish Literature at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Before coming to Northwestern, Carmen worked as a Financial Aid Coordinator at Northeastern Illinois University, where she advised and promoted financial literacy. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, photography, cooking, wine-tastings, camping, and hiking.

Sara McGuinn

A proud alumna of Northwestern, Sara studied abroad for a full year in Seville, Spain as an undergraduate and received her BA in Spanish. After completing her MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts Boston, she tutored Spanish and taught English as a second language (ESL) for several years before returning to Northwestern, this time as a staff member. Currently, she is part of the leadership team of International Educators of Illinois, where she co-coordinates the association's mentorship program. When not at work, she love spending time with her husband and kids, playing games, listening to live music, watching sports and reading.

Ryan Rounds

A Chicagoland native born in Chicago and raised in the south suburbs, Ryan joined the Global Learning Office in June 2022. Her interest in international education began in high school on a trip to Spain where she told a fellow classmate "You don't go to Spain to eat fries and ketchup."

Ryan received her B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign. She realized that psychology, though interesting, was not her calling and went on to get her M.Ed. in International Higher Education from Loyola University Chicago. In both undergraduate and graduate school, Ryan had the opportunity to study abroad in long and short-term programs in Spain, Italy, and China. Prior to coming to Northwestern, Ryan has worked in retail, non-profit administration, distance learning design and facilitation, taught English abroad, and was most recently a Study Abroad Specialist at Western Michigan University. She has a particular interest in diversifying study abroad student participation. When she is not working, Ryan loves watching true crime documentaries, traveling, ethnic food, following her favorite YouTube content creators, thrifting, and hanging out with her frenchie, Hugo.

Jacob SchoofsOriginally from Wisconsin, Jacob has been involved with international education in a variety of ways throughout his life. His lifelong international journey began with his family hosting exchange students and his own study abroad during his junior year of high school through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. This was the catalyst which sparked his deeply rooted passion for international study and exchange. He would later study abroad again by participating in the IES Abroad Language and Area Studies program in Berlin and a year-long professional internship in Hamburg, Germany. He completed his degree at Lake Forest College with a BA in Area Studies and later went on to pursue a MA/MSc in European Studies at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, in northern Germany. Before joining the Global Learning Office at Northwestern, he worked at AFS-Intercultural Programs, a nonprofit intercultural learning organization, as well as most recently with Loyola University Chicago helping students navigate processes and realize their own study abroad aspirations. Professionally, he focuses on creating comprehensive and student-focused advising and support, improving data and technology systems, and creating study abroad programming that is accessible and life-changing for all stakeholders.

Over the years, his adventures have taken him to destinations in Europe, Oceania and throughout North America. In his free time, he enjoys all things German (language, food, music, film and beyond), spending time with his partner and dog, playing video games, watching any movie he can get his hands on, singing, reading, walking along the lake, playing volleyball, and getting to know new cultures, foods, and lived experiences.

Kevin Tribe

A Chicago native, Kevin graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2014 with a BA in American Studies. During his time as an undergraduate student, Kevin studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland studying Irish literature and Irish history. Kevin then spent two years participating in the Alliance for Catholic Education Program teaching elementary and middle school while obtaining his master’s degree in Education from Notre Dame in 2016. After multiple years of teaching, Kevin obtained his second master’s degree in Higher Education Administration and Policy Program from Northwestern University 2020.

Before coming to the Global Learning Office, Kevin worked as an Undergraduate Admissions Counselor and Assistant Director of Graduate and International Admissions at North Park University. In his spare time, Kevin enjoys playing and watching sports, completing puzzles, cooking, and reading.

Aline Vivirito-ValaisAline, originally from France, developed a passion for cross-cultural communication while working as an au pair in Edinburgh, Scotland. She pursued her interest by studying Foreign Cultures, Linguistics, and Literature in English at Nantes Université, France. Aline has studied abroad twice, first as an undergraduate at Northern Arizona University, and later as a graduate student at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she also worked as a teaching assistant for the French department. After returning to France, Aline worked at IES Abroad Nantes, where she assisted American exchange students while pursuing her MA in Education and English as a Second Language. Before joining Northwestern in March 2023, Aline taught ESL in Northern France, helping students develop their intercultural skills. She is excited to continue promoting global education at the Global Learning Office.

 

Aline has traveled to various locations throughout Europe, North America, and North Africa. In her personal time, she enjoys baking, playing board games, reading, and volunteering as a literacy tutor to assist non-native English speakers in her community.

Norvell Watts

Norvell joined the Global Learning Office in July of 2021. A native Chicagoan, Norvell’s interest in international education was sparked during educational trips abroad as a Chicago Public School student. After years of working in university student services, Norvell assumed the role of Community Engagement Manager for an international exchange and travel nonprofit. Norvell would further his involvement in international communities by first moving to Bangkok, Thailand then to Montreal, Canada to teach English. Additionally, Norvell worked in compliance for Greenheart International ensuring international students were treated fairly in employment across the United States. Norvell holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Roosevelt University and a master’s degree in Education Administration: Higher Education Leadership from the University at Albany SUNY. He has a particular interest in making international education more accessible and equitable. When he is not working, Norvell loves cycling, kayaking, reading, listening to podcasts, and cooking.

Diego Arispe-BazanProfessor Arispe-Bazán has been working and teaching in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern since 2019. In his role at GLO, he oversees the development of co-curricular programs for undergraduate students and teaches the GESI summer course, which prepares students and follows them in a summer internship with a small community nonprofit abroad. The student opportunities he develops through GLO focus on global citizenship, community building, and topics in social justice. Prior to Northwestern, he was working toward his PhD in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. He continues to teach and mentor students as Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern, researching on topics in race, coloniality and decolonization, and Andean Indigenous diaspora. He is also one of the organizers of the Thinking Andean Studies group and conference series.

Laura Barron

Laura joined the office in September 2016. She received a BA in English with a minor in Art History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During college Laura studied abroad at Oxford University. Before starting at ULA she worked at Barnes & Noble, the Evanston Public Library and Northwestern's Office of the Registrar. In her free time Laura enjoys reading, travel and trapeze class.

Lena Elmeligy

Lena graduated from Northwestern in 2018 as a Radio/Television/Film major with a minor in Middle East and North African studies. As a student, Lena studied abroad a total of four times to Amman, Jordan with grants from Northwestern. In Amman, she studied Arabic, developed a film program in partnership with local artists and foundations, and researched art as an expression of identity and resistance.

Since graduating she has served as production manager, producer, social media and campaign manager, writer and director for various independent film productions in Chicago, including her own web series for Open Television. She's served a leadership role with Mezcla Media Collective, a non-profit hub for non-binary and women filmmakers of color in Chicago, since graduating. As Mezcla's Mentorship Coordinator, she paired Northwestern undergraduates with industry professionals in Chicago. Lena remains passionate about collaborating with community organizations that incorporate art into their social justice and healing justice practices.

Jacob SchoofsOriginally from Wisconsin, Jacob has been involved with international education in a variety of ways throughout his life. His lifelong international journey began with his family hosting exchange students and his own study abroad during his junior year of high school through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. This was the catalyst which sparked his deeply rooted passion for international study and exchange. He would later study abroad again by participating in the IES Abroad Language and Area Studies program in Berlin and a year-long professional internship in Hamburg, Germany. He completed his degree at Lake Forest College with a BA in Area Studies and later went on to pursue a MA/MSc in European Studies at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, in northern Germany. Before joining the Global Learning Office at Northwestern, he worked at AFS-Intercultural Programs, a nonprofit intercultural learning organization, as well as most recently with Loyola University Chicago helping students navigate processes and realize their own study abroad aspirations. Professionally, he focuses on creating comprehensive and student-focused advising and support, improving data and technology systems, and creating study abroad programming that is accessible and life-changing for all stakeholders.

Over the years, his adventures have taken him to destinations in Europe, Oceania and throughout North America. In his free time, he enjoys all things German (language, food, music, film and beyond), spending time with his partner and dog, playing video games, watching any movie he can get his hands on, singing, reading, walking along the lake, playing volleyball, and getting to know new cultures, foods, and lived experiences.

Kevin Tribe

A Chicago native, Kevin graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2014 with a BA in American Studies. During his time as an undergraduate student, Kevin studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland studying Irish literature and Irish history. Kevin then spent two years participating in the Alliance for Catholic Education Program teaching elementary and middle school while obtaining his master’s degree in Education from Notre Dame in 2016. After multiple years of teaching, Kevin obtained his second master’s degree in Higher Education Administration and Policy Program from Northwestern University 2020.

Before coming to the Global Learning Office, Kevin worked as an Undergraduate Admissions Counselor and Assistant Director of Graduate and International Admissions at North Park University. In his spare time, Kevin enjoys playing and watching sports, completing puzzles, cooking, and reading.

Sara Tully

Sara received her BS (Foreign Service) in History and Diplomacy and her MA in German and European Studies from Georgetown University. During this time, she spent two years studying at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn and completed a year-long internship with the German parliament. Sara joined Northwestern in August 2017 after 18 years as Executive Director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Center for International Education and an early career as Program Officer for the US Department of Education’s Title VI grant programs. Sara is a member of AIEA, NAFSA, the Forum on Education Abroad, and the Global Leadership League, and has served as a consultant for US colleges, universities and government agencies seeking to strengthen international education programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the development and management of Northwestern’s overseas undergraduate curriculum and its alignment with Northwestern’s global strategy
  • Expanding access to degree-relevant study abroad reflective of students’ needs and interests
  • Strengthening learning abroad as an integral part of the undergraduate experience
  • Engaging Northwestern faculty as partners, participants and advocates

Aline Vivirito-ValaisAline, originally from France, developed a passion for cross-cultural communication while working as an au pair in Edinburgh, Scotland. She pursued her interest by studying Foreign Cultures, Linguistics, and Literature in English at Nantes Université, France. Aline has studied abroad twice, first as an undergraduate at Northern Arizona University, and later as a graduate student at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she also worked as a teaching assistant for the French department. After returning to France, Aline worked at IES Abroad Nantes, where she assisted American exchange students while pursuing her MA in Education and English as a Second Language. Before joining Northwestern in March 2023, Aline taught ESL in Northern France, helping students develop their intercultural skills. She is excited to continue promoting global education at the Global Learning Office.

 

Aline has traveled to various locations throughout Europe, North America, and North Africa. In her personal time, she enjoys baking, playing board games, reading, and volunteering as a literacy tutor to assist non-native English speakers in her community.

Norvell Watts

Norvell joined the Global Learning Office in July of 2021. A native Chicagoan, Norvell’s interest in international education was sparked during educational trips abroad as a Chicago Public School student. After years of working in university student services, Norvell assumed the role of Community Engagement Manager for an international exchange and travel nonprofit. Norvell would further his involvement in international communities by first moving to Bangkok, Thailand then to Montreal, Canada to teach English. Additionally, Norvell worked in compliance for Greenheart International ensuring international students were treated fairly in employment across the United States. Norvell holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Roosevelt University and a master’s degree in Education Administration: Higher Education Leadership from the University at Albany SUNY. He has a particular interest in making international education more accessible and equitable. When he is not working, Norvell loves cycling, kayaking, reading, listening to podcasts, and cooking.

Maayan Abouzaglo

Maayan Abouzaglo (she/hers) is a senior majoring in Social Policy with a minor in Legal Studies and Middle East and North African Studies, as well as a certificate of achievement in Holocaust Studies. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Maayan is the daughter of immigrants and hopes to work in foreign policy or law. In Fall 2021, she studied abroad at King’s College London in London, England.

Katia BautistaKatia Bautista is a junior studying Economics and Global Health Studies with a minor in Business Institutions and Data Science. She is a first-generation Mexican-American student originally from Chicago. Katia studied abroad virtually in Costa Rica through GESI in the Summer of 2021. She hopes to get into finance after graduation!
