Scholarships & Funding

You are encouraged to apply for study abroad scholarships to help offset the cost of your program. For financial aid recipients, outside scholarships will reduce the amount of your subsidized loans for study abroad, if any.

Fund for Education Abroad

For U.S. students participating in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad, including first-generation college students and minority students.

Gilman Scholarship

For U.S. citizens who are Federal Pell Grant recipients, either currently or during your study abroad program.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

US-Japan Bridging Scholarships

For undergraduate students majoring in any field of study. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before or during the time they are studying abroad.

The U.S..-Japan Council Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship

For U.S. or Japanese students who are currently in good academic standing at an accredited college or university in either the United States or Japan. Applicants must have applied, been accepted or plans to apply to a college/university or approved academic center outside of their home country as part of a credit-bearing course of study.

For a U.S. woman who will study in Israel, identifies strongly as Jewish, has a 3.5 GPA or higher, and demonstrates a strong interest in public advocacy, public policy or government affairs.

Northwestern Program of African Studies: African Research Leadership Award

For undergraduate students developing and leading a research project or a program related to African Studies. Students develop, manage, and complete a project examining an issue in African Studies related to the student's academic interests and program(s) of study. These grants can be used for research conducted as part of a study abroad program.
