BHM Global Week is designed to educate and support Black students looking to study abroad and engage in various global spaces. We have planned a series of programs aimed at answering common questions from Black students interested in study abroad, as well as strategies for navigating the unique obstacles that Black students encounter in their study abroad endeavors.
What's Poppin? Advice & Resources for Black Students

What's Poppin? is a bimonthly programming series highlighting Black Northwestern staff, faculty, and graduate/professional students' journey(s) and understanding of their role at the university. Through storytelling and casual dialogue, this program is a cornerstone for cultivating relationships within the Black community. Norvell Watts of the Global Learning Office (GLO) will join for the inaugural What’s Poppin program.

Traveling While Black Panel Discussion

Our panel of black travelers will discuss how identity and travel have intersected during their experiences exploring the world. The panel will discuss travel accessibility, cultural norms abroad, the increase of black travelers, obstacles, and racism. Audience members will be invited to as questions at the end. The panel will include Ryan Rounds, Jessica Hunter, Aida Zeleke , Norvell Watts, and be moderated by Gerpha Gerlin.

Keynote Speaker: Andrew Gordon

Andrew Gordon is an award-winning social impact entrepreneur and CEO & Founder of Includifi, an inclusion management software that helps organizations achieve their belonging and success goals. Prior to Includifi he was CEO of Diversity Abroad, a global education organization he founded in 2006. As a thought leader with a deep passion for equitable access to opportunity, he advises college & university, non-profit, and business leaders on strategies for achieving holistic success for today’s students and employees. He’s fluent in Spanish, proficient Portuguese and has studied, worked, and traveled in 60+ countries on 6 continents. Gordon's fireside chat will be led by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman.

Passport Initiative
- Deadline - February 28
- Awarding 10 scholarships
The Global Learning Office (GLO) will be awarding 10 students passports! Award recipients will be walked through the entire passport application process culminating in a visit to the Evanston Post Office to send in their application. You do not have to have applied or be in the process of applying for a study abroad program in order to be considered for this award.
